New York Proposes Raising Minimum Wage
New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver plans to introduce a bill that would increase New York’s minimum wage from $7.50 an hour to $8.50, according to the New York Times. If it passes, then New York would have the third highest minimum wage in the country, trailing behind Washington, at $9.04 and Oregon, at $8.80, according to Department of Labor data, though raises are being considered in a number of other states as well. The speaker said that he wants to make increasing the minimum wage his top legislative priority, and already has the support from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on this issue. Governor Andrew Cuomo, meanwhile, is supportive of the raise in principle, but would want to see the details of the legislation first before going further, continued to the New York Times.
