Same-sex marriage bill means new tax considerations for some clients
Same-sex couples in New York state now have access to most of the legal rights, privileges and responsibilities that apply to heterosexual couples regarding marriage -- including access to several tax and employment benefits -- due to the passage of the Marriage Equality Act, which was signed into law by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on June 24.
New property tax cap limits growth to 2%
Legislation signed into law by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on June 30 imposes a cap on property tax increases for local government entities, including counties, local municipalities and school districts. The cap will provide relief for New Yorkers burdened by “backbreaking” property taxes, Cuomo said in a statement, which are 96 percent higher than the rest of the country -- a median $3,755 in New York vs. $1,917 nationwide.
